Full Description

The name given to this site has no material evidence to support it, but there may well have been a chapel of ease dedicated to St Andrew for the accommodation of the inhabitants of Lullworth St Andrew". In 1433 an inquisition was held to obtain proof of the age of a Walter Payne, who affirmed he was born at Lulworth St Andrew and baptized in the church of St Andrews. <1>

The site of this church is now covered with brambles and long grass. No surface finds were made. A piece of cruciform mansonry that may be from this church is incorporated in the porch of St Andrews farm. (See SY 88 SW 12). The area in which this church falls is part of Lulworth Camp. <3>

St Andrew's Chapel is likely to have formed a central feature of the medieval settlement of West Lulworth, which is recorded as Lolovorde or Loloworde in the Domesday Book. The origins of the chapel are unknown but is it assumed to have been medieval in date. The name St Andrew's passed onto the farm to the south during the seventeenth century. The precise details appear to be obscure and the site of the chapel has been built over by modern warehousing. The chapel is not recommeded for scheduling.<4>
