Summary

A mound surrounded by an outer ditch is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and Lidar imagery of Hambury Tout. It is considered likely to be the site of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential round barrows located on Hambury Tout (see also MDO8243 & MDO8244), and was probably opened in around 1790 by Milner who found bones and urns.

Full Description

A mound, approximately 10m in diameter, surrounded by a 1.3m wide outer ditch, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs <10-11> and Lidar imagery <12> of Hambury Tout. It is considered likely to be the site of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential round barrows located on Hambury Tout (see also MDO8243 & MDO8244). This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).

Hanbury Hill " … a tumulus or circle about 10ft in dia. Of large loose stones … a gigantic skeleton had been found there" - 1791. (May apply to this tumulus which is situated on Hambury Tout). <2>

'B') A bowl barrow sited at SY 81608028. Possiby opened by J Milner the same day as he dug into (a). Bones and broken urns found. <3>

'B' - A mound of 15.0m. Diameter and 0.5m. High. A surrounding ditch 1.3m. Wide, and 0.25 m. deep is visible except at the NE quadrant. A hollow in the centre has a diameter of 3.5m. And a depth of 0.4m. No berm is visible. No surface finds were made in the vicinity of this bowl barrow, which is grass covered. Surveyed at SY 81628028. <4>

'B'-(41)-SY 81638030. Ditched bowl barrow, about 47ft diameter and 3ft hgih, much disturbed. Probably opened by Milner who found bones and urns. <6>

SY 816802-816803. Hambury Tout round barrows. Scheduled. <7>

'B'. SY 81648029. Bowl Barrow, diameter 18.0m. Overall including a ditch 1.5m. Wide and 0.3m. Deep. The height is 1.0m. Maximum. The ditch is not visible on the north and east sides. Resurveyable at 1/2500 on M.S.D. <8>
