'5.2.4.2 The Chapel.
a. Field Evidence. A33 (SY89678911) is the site of a Wesleyan Chapel, now heavily over-grown by rhododendron. The remains are of a possible chimney in concrete/stone and a rectangular outline on the ground.
b. Documentary Evidence. The chpal is marked as a Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan) on the 1888 OS first Edition 6" map and again on the 1889 25" First Edition. By 1902 (OS 25" 2nd ed.) it is shown as derelict, (Map 11). A poor photograph exists of the derelict chapel in one of the Estate albums.
A search of the Minutes of the Poole Circuit of Methodists in the Dorset Record Office record that in March 1789 Carey had three members and in January 1879 a minister Mr Salisbury was appointed. However in March 1879 the Poole Circuit was split with Wareham, Morden, Highwood, Binegar, Wool and Carey forming the Wareham Circuit. Minutes for this group are not available and the Wareham Methodist Church, minutes of the Trusts date from 1903 consisting of Wool, Binegar and Morden, but not Carey. The raising of the money for the Chapel and its construction took place after 1879 and before 1888, thus it could only have been in use for 20 years at the most.'
