Full Description

According to Ladle and Wheatley short cross silver penny of King John found in a garden on the east side of Roper's Lane in 1962. The obverse depicts the king's head with a sceptre to the left of the legend HENRICUVS REX. On the reverse, in the centre is a four limbed cross and within each angle are four pellets, the legend reads R VF ON LV DC. In 1180 in the later part of the reign of Henry II the new short cross coinage was introduced and the entire issue into the reigns of kings after him bears the legend HENRICVS. Rauf the minter of London minted coins between 1199 and 1216 for King John's reign. The finder Mr Ken Talbot has retained the coin.(1)

The location of this find is not wholly accurate as a precise location could not be obtained by Mrs Ladle. (2)
