Full Description

The chapel of St John was situated on the East of South Street where now stands a tenement. There is not now the least remains of it. It seems to have been a free chapel or Chantry. We find little account of it, except that Wm. Baker, chaplain was presented to it 9th April 1428. It was in being long after the Reformation; for May 4, 1631 J. Crouch BA was presented by the King to this chapel. <1>

No further information obtained during field investigation. Police station now stands on the site. <3>

The Free Chapel of St John the Baptist stood in St Johns Hill next to South Street; the mention of a fair of St John the Baptist circa 1280 and 1306 may hint at its existence. Certainly it existed circa 1415 and continued in use into the 17th century. <4>
