Monument record MDO8165 - Saxon occupation evidence at St Martin's House, Wareham

Three trenches, centred at SY 92268760, were excavated between St Martins House and North Street. Trench 1: A gully and pit both Early Medieval, were discovered. Trench 2: Several gullies, pits and post-holes probably spanning the C10th-C13th/C14th. No structured patterns. The base of a Medieval oven was found. Trench 3: A Medieval cistern, numerous post-holes, a few pits and gullies all of the C10th (?) - C13th/C14th. The clay-lined cistern may be associated with an industrial process. Throughout the area, frequent abraded Roman sherds attest to the rural nature of this part of Wareham in the Roman and post-Roman periods. <3>
