Full Description
The site excavated by Poole Museums Service and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton is located on the south side of east street, on the east corner of its junction with Church Street. After two 19th century houses were demolished, an excavation took place in January 1977 before rebuilding. 30 cms below the Victorian foundations was a fine black humus 40cms deep with 12th to 14th century pottery and no later material. 2 slots and 4 stakeholes were found cut into a 32 cm deep redeposited sandy layer. This lay over a black soil layer which in turn lay over an undisturbed natural sand. These layers contained only medieval pottery. A N-S gully was found with a marked southern slope , and it measured 1.3m wide at its top with its east edge 5.3m from the edge of Church Street. (1)
