Summary

What appears to be an irregular circular hollow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs on the edge of the cliff at Hobarrow Bay. It is considered possible this could be an enclosure or pit associated with Roman industrial activities in this area (see also MDO8096).

Full Description

What appears to be an irregular circular hollow, approximately 42m in diameter, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs at this location (2). It is considered likely to be the remains of the feature described above, possibly an enclosure or pit associated with Roman industrial activities in this area (see also MDO8096). This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). It is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial photographs available to the project.

'Enclosure visible on AP. and probably associated with the nearby RB industrial site. Earthworks visible on the N and W side. The enclosure has been eroded from the cliff face. Field occasionally ploughed and in ley pasture when visited. See RAF/VAP/1821: 3416, 3417. 7/7/C.'
