Full Description

North and South Egliston, referred to as 'Egelineston' in 1202 Assize Rolls. <2>

Desertion at Egliston covers over 8ha., with no formal plan, although the S. and E part is circumscribed by a boundary bank 0.7m. high, and ditch. Fragmentary hollow ways 0.2m. to 1.6m. deep meander through rectilinear closes with banks and scarps up to 0.5m. high and which vary in size from .04 to .35 ha. About a dozen building platforms can be identified. The lazy beds referred to (Authy) 1 at SY 89468067 cross a lynchet forming a common boundary to two closes.

The whole area is under pasture but at SY 897808, evidently a later extension to the village, very long grass precluded the accurate identification and survey of very low banks and lynchets extending some 70m. eastwards of those portrayed. Surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4>

Earthworks associated with the deserted medieval settlement at North Egliston are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (2-4). They were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

'(10) Settlement Remains at North Egliston (895806) consist of about 7 acres of small scarped platforms E. and S. of the derelict farm. 'Chapel Close' is traditionally the site of a chapel dedicated to St. Margaret. Only the farm and two cottages existed in Shipp's time (c. 1860) (Hutchins I, 619-20). A platform (x), 108 ft. to 126 ft. by some 108 ft., bears nine parallel E. to W. ridges, apparently built up by digging, with 'furrows' 3 ft. to 4 ft. wide; they are probably lazy-beds of a late phase.'
