Full Description

The lynchets have been ploughed and are generally in poor condition. The majority are traceable only in a low light. <3>

Earthworks of medieval strip lynchets and ridge and furrow surrounding Tyneham village (MDO8054) are visible on aerial photographs <6-8> and Lidar imagery <9-10>. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).

‘(9) STRIP FIELDS occur in four main areas around Tyneham village. … (c) Strip lynchets and broad ridge-and-furrow (88398000 to 88428052) cover at least 27 acres E. and S.E. of the church. The Tyneham to Egliston road seems to cut them. The broad rig W. of Tyneham House crosses scarps up to 5 ft. high, probably the remains of 'Celtic' fields.’
