Summary

Bronze Age bell barrow situated in Millicent's Plantation. It survives as an earthwork with a maximum diameter of 20 metres and height of 2 metres. A hollow in the top of the mound, probably the result of an excavation, measures 5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres deep. The berm is visible on the eastern side of the mound, measures 3 metres in width and is enclosed by a ditch 3 metres wide and 0.3 metres deep. The ditch has been badly mutilated by tank tracks. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery.

Full Description

Very large. Perhaps a bell-barrow with berm rather overspread. The whole site is so smothered in trees and undergrowth that inspection is extremely difficult. <2>

Inside ditch to inside ditch this barrow has a diameter of 20.0m and the height from the top of the mound to its bottom of the ditch is 1.4m. The ditch, which has been obliterated in the southern quadrant, averages 2.8m wide and 0.3m deep and has been badly mutilated by tank tracks the berm is 2.0m wide. A rectangular hollow on top is 5.2m long and 0.7m deep. A fern and heather covered bell barrow. <3>

SY 82699179 Bell barrow with diameter of mound and berm, 65ft. The height of the mound is 6ft and there is a ditch about 8ft wide. Hollowed in centre and overgrown. <4>

SY 82699179. Bell barrow, 25.0m. in diameter overall, with a ditch 3.0m. wide and 0.3m. deep visible on all except the south-west quadrant. The berm, 3.5m. wide is now only visible on the eastern half. The height of the mound is 2.1m. above the ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <5>

A Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery <8> on Milicent's Plantation, Turners Puddle. The barrow is sub-oval in shape and measures 28 m by 20 m. This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
