Summary

Removal of topsoil in the plot to the south of Burton Pumping Station revealed a scatter of prehistoric worked flint. During excavation ofa pipe trench at the site, two large isolated rocks were exposed: their size and weathered appearance, and their association with prehistoric worked flint, may suggest that they formed part of an artificial structure.

‘Site 612 (SY 6892291862) Prehistoric Worked Flint Scatter. Following the removal of topsoil in the plot to the south of Burton Pumping Station, a scatter of prehistoric worked flint was noted. A total of 45 worked fragments were recovered. During excavation of the pipe trench, two large isolated rocks were exposed. The largest measured 1.1m x 0.9m x 0.25m. The size and weathered appearance of these rocks and their occurrence in association with prehistoric worked flint, may suggest that they formed part of some deliberate structure.’

‘BURTON PUMPING STATION, NEAR DORCHESTER
An evaluation by fieldwalking and a watching brief were carried out in advance of and during the construction of a new pumping station (centred on SY 6890 9190).
The site covers an area of c. 1.2 ha. It lies approximately 1 km north of the Iron Age hillfort at Poundbury and the centre of Roman Durnovaria. Closer to the site, c. 400m to the south-east, a number of probable Roman burials have been found.
The finds recovered during the fieldwalking included a general scatter of worked flint of probable Middle-Late Bronze Age date. The pottery found was mainly medieval or post-medieval in date, although four sherds of earlier medieval material were also recovered.
No archaeological features were observed during the watching brief; some worked flints were noted during topsoil stripping. ‘
