<2> Poole Museum Service Archaeological Unit, Poole Museum Service list of observations, PMO31 (Index). SDO16105.
‘There is a post medieval industrial site 100 ± 10m from the café adjacent to the ferry (on the inside Poole harbour shoreline of the Studland peninsula).
The site was visited 25/1/87 and consisted of a sand dune 3m high with a scatter of burnt orange brick fragments c. 10cm wide. Midway up the mound was a flue-like structure consisting of two walls of single coursed brick with three courses present. The two walls separated by c 30cm. All overgrown and windblown sand disturbed etc. Many brick frags burnt on surface. Bricks are soft orange unfrogged standard size, probably 19th.
Mr D Markell believes this to be the kiln of the 19C pipemaker Hymer. However, no evidence of pipe stems was found, they may have been removed by collectors.’
