Monument record MDO7918 - Studland Circles, Studland Heath, east of Greenland, Studland

A group of 15 enclosures, part of the group of earthworks known as Studland Circles, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1971 on Studland Heath, to the east of Greenland. A second group of circles are visible to the north east (see 6 019 043 B).

A group of 15 enclosures, part of the group of earthworks known as Studland Circles, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1971 on Studland Heath, to the east of Greenland.
They cover an area measuring approximately 290 m by 187 m. The earthworks are formed of shallow circular depressions, or circular banked or ditched enclosures. They measure between approximately 11 m and 38 m in diameter. (1-2) The date and function of the circular depressions or enclosures is unclear but excavation work carried out on one of the circles in 2009 suggested that they may be post medieval in origin. (3) A second group of circles are visible to the south west (see 6 019 043 D). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
