Summary

A possible Bronze Age bowl barrow 28.0 metres in diameter and has a height of 1.8 metre. It has no ditch or berm and is turf covered. It is spread out and badly pitted on top and in the southern quadrant. Is located to the west of Ferry Road and to the north of Wadmore Lane, Studland. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s.

Full Description

'A' at SZ 03238305 is a bowl barrow with a diameter of 28.0m. And a height of 1.8m. It has no ditch or berm and is turf covered. It is spread out and badly pitted on top and in the southern quadrant. (2)

'A' - SZ 03238305. Bowl barrow, 30 paces diameter and 5 1/2ft high. (3)

'A' - SZ 03238306. (40) Bowl (?) barrow, about 60ft diameter and about 2ft high on natural knoll and merging with it. Hollowed on top. (4)

Two barrows remain generally as described by Auth 4. A: Is on undisturbed grassland and is in good condition. No change to published survey. The published 1:2500 survey has been revised. Both are 23m OD. (6)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s. The barrow is formed of a sub-oval mound measuring 20 m by 26 m, surrounded by a ditch measuring up to 3 m in width. (8) The site is still partially visible as an earthwork on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (9) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).

‘Bowl barrow, Diam. 18.2m and Ht. 0.6m. Situated on pastureland newly ploughed when visited. The mound has been ploughed down and now merges with the natural knoll on which it was built. The hollow on top reported by the RCHM now shows as a lighter soil mark only. OS SZ08SW12. 1/3/C.’
