Summary

Bell barrow 99 feet diameter (including berm), 9 feet high with ditch 12 feet wide and 1½ feet deep. Berm largely obscured by slip from mound which is flattened on top by golf tee. The modified barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and lidar imagery.

Full Description

A very large barrow, with well marked ditch, probably a bell barrow with narrow berm almost overspread. <2>

Inside ditch to inside ditch this barrow has a diameter of 32.0m. The completely encircling ditch has been an average width of 3.5m. And an average depth of 0.7m. The height from the top of the mound to the bottom of the ditch is 3.2.m. on the south quadrant. It is heavily overgrown with gorse and heather except for the top
which is flat and serves as a golfing tee. It is surmounted by a flagstaff. Slight variation in the height of gorse indicates berm. Bell Barrow. <3>

SZ 01818211. Fishing Barrow, bell (?) barrow with diameter including berm, 99ft and 9ft high. The ditch is 12ft wide and 1 1/2ft deep. Berm largely obscured by slip from round, which is flattened on tip by a golf tee. <4>

A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery <6-7> on Godlingston Heath. The barrow measures approximately 29 m in diameter and has a ditch running around the northern, eastern and southern sides. The mound is flattened on the top. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

‘Mound diam. 30.2m and Ht.2.7m. Ditch diam. 37.6m and width 3.7m depth 0.5m. Situated on the N edge of a golf course, SE berm obscured by a golf tee. The mound is densely overgrown with gorse and a track crosses the N and W perimeter of the mound. Ditch not clear. 1/2/B. ‘
