Summary

Earthworks of settlement remains, part of the medieval village of West Morden, and situated to the south-east of the present village. Banked and ditched earthworks and linear features are visible at West Morden are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. A further area of shrunken medieval settlement to the west is recorded under MDO46887.

Full Description

The remains of the settlement that once existed at SY 906952, have been reduced by ploughing to a few minor scarps which present no identifiable pattern. <2>

Banked and ditched earthworks and linear features are visible at West Morden are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs <4>. The features comprise the remains of probable former tofts and boundaries within a large field, positioned on the north side of a sub-circular pond, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and on an OS map dated 1955 <5, 6>. Further linear banked field boundaries are visible in fields to the west and north. They are considered likely to be associated with an area of shrunken medieval village on the southeast side of West Morden. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

A further area of shrunken medieval settlement to the west is recorded under MDO46887.
