Full Description

(SY 95289737) Small pit with earth ring round it. <1>

SY 95289736. This earthwork consists of a roughly circular bank 3.5m. wide and 0.7m. high, formed perhaps mainly by upcast from a central pit 0.8m. deep. The earthwork has an overall diameter of 13.0m. The low bank on the east side beyond the circular work is more a scarp than a bank, and apparently caused by digging for earth for the main work. There is no entrance to the main work and its purpose is obscure. There is a very large disused quarry immediately north of the earthwork and there may be a connection between the two sites. The pit, basin shaped with a flat bottom 1.5m. In diameter, and the bank surrounding it, are tree covered. <2>

The features are visible as a U-shaped bank and inner hollow with a trackway running through the centre of this from the south, turning west, on a 1947 aerial photograph [4]. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
