Full Description

Hutchins refers to a hunting lodge belonging to the Royal Forest of Purbeck as situated 'on a hillock near Swanwich (Swanage), where there are ruins of a windmill'. <1>

Robinson <2> considered 'Windmill Knapp' hill to be the site (but see windmill mound at SZ 00907894).

SZ 007801. The representation of a windmill with the description 'Old Windmill' appears on Taylor's map of 1765,
and Mills notes a Dorset County Museum deed of 1656 that refers to 'Windmill ground … with the Windmill that stands, thereon, the Windmill-house'. 'Windmill Grounds' and 'Twelve acres by Windmill' are on the Tithe Map of 1838 and the names 'Windmill Knap' and 'Windmill Barn' are shown here on OS 6" 1963. <3-4>
