Full Description

‘Metherhills, Kimmeridge (Site3). In view of the Rev. J. H. Austen’s statement that coal-money was abundant about on hundred years ago at Metherhills, I dug over thirty small trial holes f4 ft. x 2 ft. on the south side of this hill in 1946. Evidence of shale working was found in an oval patch which began near the southernmost point of the 200 ft. contour, and ran for 40 yds. south-westwards down the hillside. The remains consisted of about 250 flint flake sections, 180 other worked flints and some 50 small sherds, among which New Forest ware and conical flanged bowls could be recognized.’

‘The site lies in a regularly ploughed field, in ley pasture visited. 7/7/D.’
