'Pottery vessels from Highwood, East Stoke ; SY 870860. Two damaged one-handled jars of good pinkish-brown ware, with brownish glaze inside, were presented to the Museum (1955.26.1-2) by Mr. S. Lord of "Brackendene", Highwood, East Stoke, through Mr. P. A. Brown, who tells me that they were found by the donor some years ago when building his own house. The vessels are fairly thin-walled squat wide-mouthed jars which clearly come from the same workshop. They have short upright necks defined by neatly turned cordons and grooves at the base, and a horizontally projecting rim survives on the more complete of the two, which is 6 ins. High. The handle of plain oval section, attached to the rim, joins the body in a wide splay with a central thumb-depression. I am inclined to place them in the 18th century. There is also part of a wheel-turned hollow-based candlestick with handle, of whitish ware with a light green glaze flecked with brown, of later medieval appearance.'
