Summary

A bowl barrow situated on a plateau, overlooking the Piddle Valley to the north east. The barrow, which was recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in 1970, has a mound composed of earth, sand and turf, with maximum dimensions of 22 metres in diameter and approximately 1.6 metres in height. The top of the mound has a slit trench relating to former military training activities. The mound is surrounded by a ditch from which material was quarried during its construction. This has become infilled over the years, but will survive as a buried feature 2 metres wide. Scheduled.

'B' - SY 89038781. Bowl barrow, 20.5m diameter and 1.9m high with slit trench in top. <2>

Farm Heath Group of five barrows on slope dropping north towards River Piddle. 'B' - (46) SY 89028783. Bowl barrow 63 ft diameter and 6 ft high. A trench cuts into the centre. <4>

'B' SY 89038782. Bowl barrow, diameter 22.0m., height 1.6m. No visible ditch. 'A' and 'B'. Resurveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <5>

A mound, approximately 16.8m in diameter, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs <9-14> and Lidar imagery <15> of Farm Heath, East Stoke. It is considered likely to be the remains of the Bronze Age round barrow described above. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. It is one of a large group of potential late prehistoric barrows situated at this location (see also MDO7701-05 and MDO30236-41).
