Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Stokeford Heath taken in 1945. Another round barrow (MDO7698) is located approximately 100m to the south east of this site and may have been contemporary with it. This site has since been destroyed by a modern sand and gravel pit.

Full Description

Ditched bowl barrow, 28 yds diameter and 6 ft high, dug into at centre. <2>

Tumulus, 17.5m diameter and 2.0m high and almost destroyed by an east-west track driven through it. There are traces on the north and south sides only of a ditch 1.3m wide and 0.1m deep. <3>

SY 87238825. Bowl (?) barrow about 50 ft diameter and 4 ft high, but largely destroyed. <5>

SY 873883 - SY 876885. Round barrows on Stokeford Heath. Scheduled. <6>

Completely destroyed by gravel digging. Deleted from 1:2500 M.S.D. <7>

A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Stokeford Heath taken in 1945 <8>. It comprises of a circular mound, approximately 15m in diameter. A hollow in the centre of the mound may have been due to previous excavation of this site. Another round barrow (MDO7698) is located approximatly 100m to the south east of this site and may have been contemporary with it. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. It is not visible on the most recent aerial imagery available to the project, having since been destroyed by a modern sand and gravel pit.
