Find Spot record MDO7609 - Possible Clactonian flint flake near Cleavel Point, Ower Peninsula, Corfe Castle

Investigations in Autumn 1991 at the site of a late Iron Age and Romano-British industrial settlement on the Ower Peninsula revealed small features, possibly postholes and two rolled, flint flakes, one possibly of Clactonian type.

During the Autumn of 1991 archaeological investigations continued at the site of a Late Iron Age and Romano-British industrial settlement on the Ower Peninsula at Corfe Castle. A trench was excavated on the field boundary south of the centre of the site. A black sandy soil lay over the natural pale sand to a depth of 1.5m Two small features possibly postholes were observed cut into the sand one containing fragments of a waterlogged wooden stake. One context contained Iron Age and Roman pottery but the same context held clay pipe stem fragments. Two rolled , flint flakes were also recovered from this trench from the same mixed context, one of which was identified by Dr Clive Gamble as being of Clactonian type. (1)
