Monument record MDO7606 - Undated ditches at the new Norden Mine, Corfe Castle

Ditches recorded by AC archaeology in 1992 during observation of groundworks for a new clay mine. Traces of three ditches were revealed, two aligned approximately north west-south east and one aligned north-south. No clear dating evidence was found, though fragments of medieval pottery were recovered from the filling of two ditches.

‘Observation of the groundworks in preparation for a new clay mine at at Norden Farm involved the monitoring of two areas: … the access area for the new saft (around SY 9495 8275). … The second area revealed traces of three ditches, two aligned approximately north west-south east and one aligned north-south. Fragments of post-medieval pottery were recovered from the first two ditches and in one, a single flint flake. A sherd of Samian pottery, and seven sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the topsoil and exposed subsoil surface.’
