Full Description

<1> Hearne, C M, 1988, Wytch Farm Oilfield Development, Infield Flowlines: Wellsite D to Gathering Station, Archaeological Assessment. (Unpublished document). SWX8174.

'The results from the trial pits demonstrate that in additon to the earthwork observed in plot 3, an area of possible archaeological interest has been identified in plot 6. Here, trial pit 34 (located on a geophysical anomaly), and pit 35 (positioned within a surface depression), identified two subsoil features of probable archaeological origin. The extent an nature of any associated deposits cannot be confirmed without further excavation.'

<2> Barnes, I, and Cox, P W, 1988, Wytch Farm Oilfield Development, Infield Flowlines: Wytch Moor Launch Area, Archaeological Assessment, July 1988 (Unpublished document). SWX8172.

'The evidence produced by the magnetometer survey (Appendix I) and the relatively high quantity of Medieval pottery and fired clay found in the soil matrix, indicate that in situ archaeological deposits exist within the survey area. However, only Trial Pit 74, excavated on a geophysical anomaly, identified an archaeological feature and this was at a depth below the proposed level of topsoil stripping. The dating of the pottery is consitent with material found in the previously excavated (March 1988) area to the south, on the Wellsite D to Gathering Station flowline.'
