Abundance of shale cores found at Freshwater Steps circa 1855. <1>

Waste from shale armlet industry from Freshwater Steps referred to by Hutchins (PDNHAS 71 (1949, 51). A site referred to by W. Frend at Encombe Gurgle (PDNHAS 75 (1953) 45-71 includes Iron Age rough outs and may be identical with the first site <6>.

'FRESHWATER STEPS: Waste from shale armlet industry from Freshwater Steps referred to by Hutchins. A site referred to by W. Frend at Encombe Gurgle includes I.A. rough outs. The two sites may be identical but this cannot be proved. Site lies in an area close to coastal cliffs and surrounded by ploughed land and deciduous woodland.'
