Summary

An inverted urn containing "five gallons full of burnt bones" was found during chalk digging in 1753 in the quarry near the lime kiln on the east side of the road immediately north of King Edward's Bridge. The exact location of this find is not known.

Full Description

(Area Centred SY 959824) Near the limekiln and St. Edward's Bridge, on digging chalk, 1753, was found an urn seven or eight feet deep, containing five gallons full of burnt bones; the mouth downwards. The earth around it seemed made ground. Possibly Bronze Age. <1>

The burial is presumably Bronze Age in date. <2>

The limekiln is situated at SY 95948246 and St. Edward's Bridge at SY 95938244 but apart from this no information was obtained during field investigation that would make a more accurate siting possible.<3>
