Full Description
Quarry Wood, Encombe. An inhumation burial of the Roman period was found about 1788 in quarrying near the former Encombe Lodge. The skeleton, under 'two very large flat stones set up edgeways', was accompanied by an earthen vessel of about one gallon capacity filled to the brim with 'coal money'; the quarry is evidently that at SY 949791 above the 400ft contour on the NE side of the North Gwyle. <1>
