'Roman and possibly pre-Roman remains at Rempstone, Corfe Castle. Mr. P. A. Brown records several recent finds in and near the grounds of Rempstone Hall, less than a mile east of the Brenscombe 'villa' and also on Bagshot Beds. A lower quernstone, probably of local heathstone, kept in a rockery a the Hall, was found by the herdsman, Mr. Short, in a field west of the house, about SY 99068249. It resembles the Iron Age Hunsbury type (Curwen's No. 24, Antiquity, XI, p. 142), and is 14ins. in diameter and 6½ins. high. Half of what may be an upper stone of similar material, also seen by the writer at the Hall, was found in the north hedge of the same field. It is 13½ins. in diameter, 5ins. high, and has a flat top and circular central perforation. It is battered but shows no obvious signs of use, and the lower surface has only the slightest suggestion of concavity. Mr. Brown and the writer found only a few abraded sherds, probably Romano-British, in the field, which was not then, however, under plough. Mr. Brown also records a turned shale armlet core found some years ago by Mr. Short in the stream near the swimming pool (99168246), and a roughly circular mound of unknwon date, not on O.S., about 24 yards in diameter and some 5 feet high. S.W. of Rempstone Farm at 98758267, apparently containing much Purbeck stone rubble.'
