Full Description
A Bronze Age round barrow, approximately 29m in diameter and surrounded by a 1m wide outer ditch, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Nine Barrows Down, Corfe Castle (1-2). It is one of a group of seventeen Bronze Age round barrows (MDO7427-7442) and a Neolithic long barrow (MDO7407) located here. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck mapping project.

‘Mound Diam.27.4m and Ht.3.0m.Ditch Diam.33.4m and Depth 1.2m and Wifth 6.0m. Situated on heathland and permanent pasture, mostly covered in grass but with some gorse and blackberry bushes on the outer edge. An E-W fence crosses the N.ditch. Beyond this there is a field of managed grass which is rarely ploughed if at all. E-W path crosses ditch to S. See RAF/VAP/1821:2403. OS SY98SE5. 1/2/B.’

A ditched bowl barrow, a very prominent rise, the largest of a group of seventeen round barrows and one long barrow. It is 28m dia. and 3.2 m high surrounded by a ditch 7m wide and 1.2 m deep. It lies on the crest of the chalk ridge. Nine Barrows are shown Woodward’s map (1775). A cremation was in one of the barrows in this group (Miles 1836). RCHM(1970) records that the ditch of 112,157 cuts the west edge of the ditch of round barrow 112,161. This land has been downland since at least 1585 (Treswell) and appears never to have been ploughed.
