A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Nine Barrow Down, Corfe Castle. It is one of a group of seventeen Bronze Age round barrows (MDO7427-7442) and a Neolithic long barrow (MDO7407) located here.

Full Description

A Bronze Age round barrow, approximately 17m in diameter and surrounded by a 1m wide outer ditch, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Nine Barrows Down, Corfe Castle (1). It is one of a group of seventeen Bronze Age round barrows (MDO7427-7442) and a Neolithic long barrow (MDO7407) located here. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck mapping project.

‘Bowl Barrow dian. 13.1m and ht 1.8m. Situated on heathland. Grass grows either side of an E-W path which erodes the top of the barrow. The rest of the mound is gorse covered. OS SY98SE5. RAF/VAP/1821.2403. 1/2/B.’

A bowl barrow, part of a group of seventeen round barrows and a long barrow. The mound is visible as a prominant rise 14m dia. and 1.8m high. It has no visible ditch around the mound and lies immediately east of 112,151 on the crest of the chalk ridge. Nine barrows are shown on Woodwards map (1775). A cremation was found in one of these barrows (Miles 1826). This land has been downland since at least 1585 (Treswell) and appears never to have been ploughed.
