Summary

Formal gardens situated within a landscape park at Lulworth Park. The park was emparked in 1601 and contained deer, most now returned to agriculture. The gardens were set out during the mid 17th century,and most features the walled garden and areas of woodland have disappeared. Parts of the surviving gardens were modified during the 19th century.

Full Description

Archaeological remains of extensive and complex C17 formal gardens, c.20ha, in estate at most extensive c.280ha, `landscaped' in later C18. Estate now in divided use and ownership. Walled kitchen garden C17 or early C18, 300m to south west. An elaborate garden layout was established mid-C17 and division of the woodland by geometrical paths is still apparent from aerial photographs. <6> <8>
