Full Description
Mesolithic flint industry on Chaldon Down. In 1969 Dr. White found Mesolithic material in the barrow soil and on the old land surface beneath the barrows. It is possible that a workfloor existed on the slope a very short distance away. (1)

‘Chaldon Down. SY 785812. The Down terminates in the high cliffs of Ringstead Bay, White Nothe and Bat’s Head. During the excavation of 2 Bronze Age barrows in 1969, Dr. D. White found Mesolithic material in the barrow soil and on the old land surface beneath the barrows (White, 1974 with Appx. by Palmer). Many of the artifacts from barrow B are slightly rolled, but those from barrow A are unrolled. It is possible that a workfloor existed on the slope a very short distance north of barrow B, and the artifacts were moved by rain and hill-wash, but they may be a little older than those from A. It is quite likely that the rest of the workfloor and a habitation site still exist near barrow A.’
