Full Description

Pitfield, F P, 1978, The Book of Bere Regis, 100 (Unpublished document). SDO16487.

‘Almost all manors included an enclosure for impounding stray animals, and the Bere manor pound situated at the south end of Church Cottages is now used as a garden. The present south boundary wall is built from stone recovered from the ruins of the old manor house, the coping stones being readily recognisable as such. An item in the churchwardens accounts for 1608 suggests that it may possibly have been first established in that year: “It. for fetching the tymber & makinge the pound and three formes … xx s. iiij d. (£1 0s 4d).’
