Full Description

The pits on Southover Heath and Affpuddle Heath are referred to in Gents' Magazine, 1768, as Culpepper's or Hurepepper's Dish. <2>

Cull-pepper's Dish is a funnel-like depression on top of a ridge in a gravel area. It has an approximate upper diameter of 80.0 metres,11.0 metres at the bottom, and 15.0 metres deep. There are no traces of spoil heaps in the vicnity. See ground photograph. <3>

'Cull-pepper's Dish', a natural shallow hole. <4>

It is the largest of a number of round shallow depressions in the heath caused by faults in the tertiary strata. If the hollows were notable for herbs, the allusions are perhaps to Nicholas Culpeper, author of 'English Physician or the Herbal 1653'. <5>
