Summary

A bowl barrow situated on a gentle north facing slope, overlooking the Piddle Valley to the north east and the Frome Valley to the south west. The barrow has a mound composed of earth, gravel and turf, with maximum dimensions of 18 metres in diameter and 1.1 metres in height. The mound is surrounded by a ditch from which material was quarried during the construction of the monument. The ditch has become infilled over the years, but will survive as a buried feature 1.5 metres wide. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery of 2010.

Full Description

Bowl Barrow in Sares Wood on gentle north slope. Diameter 43 feet, height 3½ feet, planted with firs. [1]

This barrow has a diameter of 16.0m and a height of 1.3m. It has no encircling ditch and bears no traces of mutilation. It is covered with ferns and coniferous trees. A bowl barrow. <3>

SY 79709251. No change: good condition. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. <6>

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery of 2010 <7>. It is sub-circular in shape and measures 15 m in diameter. The 1st ed OS map <1> shows that it appears to have been used as a focus for tracks within Sares Wood. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
