Full Description

A layer of oyster shells observed during a watching brief in Sunseeker's boatyard in 1995. The oyster shell deposit was about one metre thick and was found about two metres below present ground surface. This oyster shell deposit is likely to form part of the same oyster shell midden found at the near-by site at the Shipwright's Arms site, which is dated to the 10th-11th centuries AD. A sherd of apparently Saxo-Norman pottery retrieved from the developer's spoil heap is supposed to have come from this layer, and if so, it is the only artefactual evidence form the Poole oyster middens, however it is not securely stratified.
