Full Description
Trial excavation by Poole Museums Service at St Michael's Hall, Blandford Road, Hamworthy in July 1982 revealed evidence for late Iron Age activity and occupation in the form of ditches and pits. Three phases of late Iron Age activity were identified, together with some undated features.
The earliest phase of activity is represented by two shallow gullies and a slot aligned NE-SW and containing late Iron Age material. The second phase comprises two pits or scoops. The third phase consisted of a single ditch aligned E-W. Other undated features were all shallow gullies or slots. <1>
The finds included about 1.4% imported pottery, both Armorican and Dressel amphora sherds.
The pits were not fully excavated and may be no more than scoops or irregular areas within the ditches (P Bellamy 12/3/2012).
SZ 00074 90359. A trench 8.0m long by 2.0m wide was excavated near St Michael's Hall, Hamworthy, to investigate Iron-Age/Romano British occupation. Two shallow gulleys and a slot on a North-Easterly alignment were succeeded by two pits which were in turn replaced by a ditch on an East-West alignment. The features dated from 100 BC to AD 43. <1>
