Summary

A Lower Palaeolithic handaxe was found at Canford Magna Cemetery, which is still open and was used between 1852 and 1972. The geology in the area is alluvium. Palaeolithic handaxes, flakes and other implements from the Canford area.

Full Description

SZ 032983. Palaeolithic handaxe found at Canford cemetery. Now in Dorset County Museum, Dorchester. (1)

SZ 09 NW 33. Acheulian core and flake tools from Canford are on show in Dorset County Museum (Marsden Collection, Nos. 1922.4).

One ovate Acheulian handaxe is the only object from Canford now exhibited at the Museum. No closer location than Canford is known for any of the implements; they may have come from any old gravel pits in the area. (3)

More than 115 handaxes and 200 flakes, as well as other flints, from the Canford area are held in a number of museums. (4)
