Full Description
Linear and curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs to the northeast of Cattistock (1). They are thought to form part of a prehistoric field system of probable Iron Age/ Romano-British origin, although there may be later boundaries present. The earthwork banks include broad parallel lynchets following the contour line as well as shorter sections of linear banks that potentially form partial rectilinear enclosures on a broadly north-south axis. A double banked linear trackway is visible at ST 60071 00941. A group of more regular linear banks within a field at ST 60114 01461 may be of later origin, possibly post medieval in date, but this is not certain. The features extend for almost 1km north to south and east to west. At their northern end they adjoin a further area of prehistoric field system recorded under MDO43076. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorst Upper Frome AIM project.
The features remain visible as earthworks on Google Earth imagery.
