While fishing in the Little Channel, Poole Harbour, last week, Poole fishermen brought up with their nets a limpet-covered clay jug believed to be about 1700 years old.

It is now in Poole Museum. It was shown to Mr H P Smith, Borough historian, who declared it to be a storage vessel or jar.

It was made, it is thought, about 250 AD, probably imported, and used by the Romans at their Hamworthy community.

The fisherman whose net brought up the jar is Mr J Mathews, Emerson Road, Poole. <1>

This find is, at the moment, being dried in Poole Museum by the assistant curator F Sturgeon Esq.

The vessel is 12" high, 8" in diameter across the shoulders, and 3" in diameter across the mouth. It has an overhanging rim, and a rounded base, no form of decoration. The vessel is in perfect condition, reddish-fawn in colour.

Sited to SZ 01079010 by Poole Harbour Master. No field action. <2>
