Monument record MDO6777 - Bowl barrow, Barrow Hill Group, Poole

Ditched bowl barrow, 6m diameter 0.7m high, one of a group of six barrows on Barrow Hill. It may be one of the barrows excavated by J H Austen in 1847, which contained an unaccompanied cremation beneath a layer of flints. The feature is visible as a slightly irregular mound on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery. It was digitally plotted from these sources by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

One of a group of round barrows on Barrow Hill. Barrow 'A' - SY 99589745. Bowl barrow, 6 paces diameter and 1 1/2 feet high. Two of the three barrows 'A', Barrow 'B' (HOB uid 1457306 - SY 99 NE 57) and Barrow 'C' (HOB uid 1457307 -SY 99 NE 58) were opened in 1847 by J H Austen; both contained a (primary?) cremation; at least one interment being east of centre. <2>

Barrow 'A' - Bowl barrow, 7 metres in diameter and 0.7 metre high with unsurveyable traces of a ditch. Heather covered with a slight depression in the top. <3>

Barrow 'A' - (396) SY 99589745. Ditched bowl barrow, 20 feet in diameter and 2 1/2 feet high. Excavation information is the same as Authy 2. <5>

Barrow 'A'. SY 99589745. Bowl barrow, diameter 6 metres, height 0.7 metres, with faint but unsurveyable traces of a ditch. The barrow is on open heathland and covered with gorse. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <6>

Poole 1. SY 995589745 - A bowl barrow 6 paces in diameter and 1 1/2 feet high. <4>

A bowl barrow on Barrow Hill, part of a barrow cemetery of four bell barrows and two bowl barrows situated 150 metres to the southwest of Brookvale Farm. The barrow is one of four barrows aligned southwest-northeast, and survives as an earthwork with a diameter of 6 metres and height of 0.5 metres. (7)

The feature is visible on 1940's aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery where it comprises a slightly irregular mound approximately 7.45m in diameter <7> <8>. There is a suggestion on current Lidar imagery of indistinct depressions surrounding the mound that may be remnants of an outer ditch but these have no real form. The mound was digitally plotted from current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

'BARROW HILL GROUP (SY 99 SE). Six barrows, including four bells, on flat-topped ridge above 200 ft. contour. (396-9) form a short S.W.-N.E. alignment. All but (399) have probably been excavated. Three barrows on 'Merley Heath' were excavated by Austen in 1847: two of (396-8) contained unaccompanied cremations beneath a layer of flints; and either (400) or (401) contained a primary cremation in an upright Middle or Late Bronze Age urn, and at least five intrusive inhumations on top of mound.
