Summary

Bowl barrow recorded as being about 10 m in diameter and one metre high. It was completely excavated in 1971 in advance of gravel quarrying.The barrow was surrounded by a ditch with a causeway to the south. Primary features included 14 Deverel-Rimbury Globular and Bucket urns, many in excellent condition, a number of unaccompanied cremations, and scattered stake-holes and pits. Also primary was a setting of six upright hearthstone slabs. A total of 48 Deverel -Rimbury urns had been secondarily inserted into the barrow or in pits to the south of the barrow. Quantities of charcoal were found as well as flints, pot sherds and ground stone objects. The barrow is visible as a low vegetation covered mound on 1940s aerial photographs and was digitally plotted from these by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

B. SZ 04689597. Bowl barrow, 34 feet in diameter and 3 1/2 feet high. No ditch. Unopened. <1>

Barrow 'B' is a heather-covered bowl barrow with no visible ditch. The mound is 10.0m. in diameter and 1.0m. high. <3>

SZ 04699598. Damaged bowl barrow, 33 feet in diameter and 4 feet high. <4>

SZ 047960. "Barrow G34", Knighton Heath, was totally excavated in advance of destruction of quarrying. The barrow was surrounded by a ditch with a causeway to the south. Primary features included 14 Deverel - Rimbury Globular and Bucket urns, many in excellent condition, a number of unaccompanied cremations, and scattered stake-holes and pits. Barrow G34, Knighton Heath, was totally excavated in advance of destruction of quarrying. The barrow was surrounded by a ditch with a causeway to the south. Primary features included 14 Deverel - Rimbury Globular and Bucket urns, many in excellent condition, a number of unaccompanied cremations, and scattered stake-holes and pits. Also primary was a setting of six upright hearthstone slabs. A total of 48 Deverel -Rimbury urns had been secondarily inserted into the barrow or in pits to the south of the barrow. Quantities of charcoal were found as well as flints, potsherds and ground stone objects. C-14 date from the sandcore of the mound 1205 +/- 40 (BM-871-6). <11>

The barrow is visible as a low vegetation covered mound on 1940's aerial photographs and was digitally plotted from these by the Dorset Stour NMP project <13>. Although its edges are poorly defined due to the level of scrub cover, the feature appears to comprise a mound around 7.3m in diameter. No ditch is visible.
