Full Description

In 1975, during excavations for service trenches west of Lea Road, Wyke Regis, human bones and pottery were discovered by workmen. The disturbed remains of four skeletons were recovered. Two phases of activity in the area of Beachview Close were identified from the unstratified finds and excavated burials. The finds to the south of grave 1 suggested a Romano-British context while the burials themselves suggest an early 1st century AD date based on the pottery associated with graves 1 and 3. S. J Dockrill (0ne of the excavators noted in his report that grave 3 exhibited the late Iron Age Durotrigian characteristic of Burial upon the right hand side. And also that grave 3b seemed later than 3a, disturbing the stone cist and bones of the earlier burial. (1)
