Full Description
Fragments of a Roman cinerary urn were found when digging a grave at Broadway for the late Mr Puckett who had been murdered. <1>
Broadwey: RB pottery found "while digging the grave of the late Mr Puckett" (presum. in cemetery or churchyard). <3>
(SY 66808354) A headstone reads Adam Stapleton Puckett murdered 8 July 1862. The graveyard is small and by 1865 burials were taking place in a cemetery across the road. No information was obtained about any similar finds in the area. <4>

‘(443) BROADWEY (SY 68 SE). An Inhumation Burial was found beside the Weymouth road c. 1844. The remains, apparently of a young person, were found ‘in the Roman grave by the side of the Roman road, four miles south of Dorchester’ (F.T.Buckland, Curiosities of Natural History 2nd ser. (1860), 112). ‘Portions of a Roman cinerary urn’ were found at St. Nicholas’ Church in 1862 in digging Dr. Puckett’s grave (66808354; Hutchins II, 490), and a Durotrigian bowl, in D.C.M., comes from the ‘lower end of the railway cutting’.
