Summary

A manor house built in 1887, but incorporating the remains of an older house in the middle of the south side. The late sixteenth-century stone porch was taken down and re-erected at the eastern end of the modern front. The building is of the two storeys, ashlar-faced and gabled.

(SY 37009444) Manor House (NR) <1>

Built in 1887 but incorporates remains of an older house in the middle of the S side. The late 16th century stone porch was taken down and re-erected at the east end of the modern front. <2>

Known as Catherston Manor. Built by Wadham c 1600 and refaced and extended in 1887, retaining much of the old walling, beams and panelling. No information concerning the manor or manorial rights (a). From the exterior the main building bears no features of antiquity, but facing with Ham Hill stone possibly shields any former work of pre 1887 when the reconstruction took place as confirmed by several datestones. The interior was not inspected.

The porch is of Portland stone, of different character to the remaining building and incorporates a deep round-headed arch.

No information concerning manorial rights was obtained during field investigation. <3>

'(1) The Manor House, 50 yds. N.E. of the modern church, was built in 1887 but incorporates remains of an older house in the middle of the S. side. The late 16th-century stone porch was taken down and re-erected at the E. end of the modern front. It is of the two storeys, ashlar-faced and gabled. The outer archway has moulded jambs and elliptical arch under a square label. Inside there is an early 18th-century stair-case with square newels, turned balusters and close strings; the stair walls are lined with contemporary moulded panelling'.
