Full Description
The base of a Hanseatic pewter flagon was found in West bay by diver Mr. A J Ridges. It was brought to Poole Museum for identification. Set into the base is a pewter disc 46mm in diameter and 2mm wide showing a relief of the crucified Christ flanked by two figures thought to represent the Virgin Mary and St John. The base was found in West Bay in about 20m of water. The seabed is described as smooth and sandy with no significant shelf. No other finds were noted nearby, suggesting this may have been an isolated loss. This find is the lower half of a typical Hanseatic Flagon having separated at the soldered seam. The fragment can be dated to c. 1350-1450. (1 & 2)
