Summary

Medieval deer park at Sherborne Castle containing late 17th/early 18th-century formal gardens and extensively landscaped during the later 18th century. Extensive formal gardens were created during the 17th century between Sherborne Castle and Old Sherborne Castle but were mainly destroyed by 18th-century landscaping. Remodelled in the middle of the eighteenth century by Lancelot Brown.

Full Description

Medieval deer park, given late C17/early C18 formal gardens, extensively `landscaped' in later C18. Much now returned to agriculture, with present parkland and lake of c.48ha. Fine mature trees in parkland and beside lake. Walled kitchen garden to north west and north of stables. Extensive formal gardens created C17 between the two castles, largely obliterated by C18 `landscaping'. [Full topographical description]. Additional references, not consulted. <10>
