Full Description

(Area SU 029090) The deserted Medieval settlement of Baggeridge in Woodlands parish mentioned in a document of 1272-3, is thought to have been situated near Bagman's Copse. This is called "Bagenham Coppice" on the 1841 Tithe Map, and the most likely position for the settlement appears to be a triangular piece of unenclosed pasture shown on the Tithe Map to the west of the copse and south of a house occupying the position of the present chalk-pit. This area has been ploughed for many years and no traces of habitation now exist. <1-3>

Field A2. West of Bolehays Copse, SU 030093
Possible site of lost village of Baggeridge
This field continued a large number of medieval sherds of pottery (three times the average for the other fields) concentrated around the end of a linear feature known from aerial photographs (RCHM 1975, 116) that runs from Knowlton South Circle to this field. A sixpence, date 1573, was found in the same area.
